Apple is offering a $19 replaceable outer cover layer for the iPhone Duo that can be peeled off and replaced to reduce the visibility of the display crease. The service is available with AppleCare+ coverage, Macworld reports.

The cover layer is not user-replaceable and must be applied by Apple. Kate Bergeron, Apple’s VP of hardware engineering, said in an interview: “It’s actually replaceable, which is a really nice thing for the customer, that you can peel off that layer and get a new one.”

Apple uses multiple shifting display layers and a matte nano-texture surface to minimise the crease inherent in foldable phones. The replaceable cover is intended to prolong the display’s appearance over time. The cost without AppleCare+ has not been published; typical outer glass repairs without coverage cost $100–150 more.
