Apple plans a future macOS 27 update that will move five built-in Mac apps to a new connection method, addressing disruption caused by Microsoft’s retirement of Exchange Web Services (EWS).
The change affects Mail, Calendar, Contacts, Notes, and Reminders when accessing work or school accounts hosted on Microsoft Exchange Online, AppleInsider reported. Microsoft began disabling EWS in October 2026 and will fully shut it down by April 2027. Apple says the update will move the affected apps to Microsoft’s replacement connection method.
iPhone and iPad apps are not affected because they use Exchange ActiveSync instead of EWS. In the meantime, administrators can temporarily keep approved apps connected before Microsoft’s full shutdown. Old Dominion University has recommended Mac users switch to Outlook while the problem persists.
Apple has not announced the exact release date of the macOS 27 update or which specific connection method it will adopt.
