The Elec‘s KIMGEON reported today that BOE has been grappling with glass substrate cracking at its Gen 8.6 OLED production line (B16) in Chengdu for around six months, a problem that could delay or reduce the Chinese display maker’s chances of supplying panels for Apple’s iPad.
Each cracking incident forces a production stoppage of half to a full day for equipment cleaning and inspection. Even a low failure rate of 2–3 cracked substrates per 1,000 can disrupt continuous mass production due to the downtime required, the report notes.
BOE, which has begun qualifying OLED panels for Apple’s iPad, is running two production lines while investigating whether the cause lies in equipment, materials or process conditions. The root cause remains undetermined, and the extent of any impact on BOE’s qualification timeline for Apple iPad displays is unconfirmed.
