TSMC reported on 15 October that third-quarter diluted earnings per share were NT$29.43 (US$4.60 per ADR unit). Net income rose 68.7 per cent year on year to NT$763.06 billion and consolidated revenue climbed 50.9 per cent to NT$1,494.24 billion, or US$46.72 billion. Bloomberg reported that profit for the quarter beat analyst expectations.
Apple watchers follow these numbers closely because TSMC manufactures the A-series chips inside iPhones and iPads and the M-series processors used in Macs. A quarter that beats forecasts suggests the advanced production lines behind Apple’s silicon are running at healthy utilisation, a positive signal for the supply chain heading into Apple’s next product cycle.
TSMC does not disclose how much of its revenue comes from individual customers, so Apple’s share of the third quarter is not visible in the figures.
