Delta, Riley Testut’s game emulator for iPhone and iPad, has reached version 2.0, a day before the iPhone Duo goes on sale on 23 October. According to the release notes on the App Store, the update is built around Apple’s first foldable and also adds Sega Genesis games, a Liquid Glass redesign and RetroAchievements support.
On the iPhone Duo, Delta offers controller skins optimised “for every pose in both portrait and landscape” and supports Split View multitasking with other apps. Folding the phone puts Nintendo DS games to sleep, just as closing the lid of a real DS does. Testut told The Verge that the team had put everything into making it ready for day one. Apple’s own launch details are in our iPhone Duo launch coverage.
Sega Genesis and a new look
Sega Genesis games are now playable, with new controller skins for iPhone and iPad that “recreate the classic Genesis controller look” and built-in Action Replay and Game Genie cheats. The interface has been rebuilt for Liquid Glass and adapts to every screen size from the Duo to iPad, while default game artwork gets a lighter, glassy style.
Other additions include animated controller skins (with support for third-party skin makers), Recently Played and Favourites pages in the game library, Game Boy Color palettes for original Game Boy games, per-game fast-forward speeds, new audio settings and a redesigned pause menu. Experimental features add custom filters such as a CRT effect and support for Epilogue’s GB and SN Operator, which let you play original cartridges on iPhone and iPad.
Delta is also laying the groundwork for custom in-game experiences in the mainline Game Boy Advance Pokémon games, offered as DLC that unlocks event items and rare Pokémon; the first DLC is listed as coming soon. The Verge reports that version 2.0 adds a global ‘Become a Patron’ in-app purchase and is the emulator’s first release on the EU App Store, alongside AltStore PAL in supported regions.
