Apple’s updated CarPlay Developer Guide, dated 13 October, says existing CarPlay audio and video apps will work on the new HomeView smart display without any changes, as 9to5Mac first spotted. That gives streaming services such as YouTube and Netflix a way onto a device that has no App Store, provided they build CarPlay support.

The guide states: “CarPlay audio and video apps also work on Apple HomeView without requiring you to make any modifications to your app.” A footnote adds that apps with the CarPlay audio app or CarPlay video app entitlement appear on HomeView.

What video apps need

According to the guide, the CarPlay video app entitlement requires iOS 27. Video apps must be designed primarily for video playback and must support AirPlay video streaming. In cars, they are hidden in vehicles that do not support video playback in CarPlay, so HomeView gives developers a second, guaranteed screen for the same work.

Apple has not said which third-party video services will add CarPlay support, so it is unclear whether any will be ready when HomeView arrives.

Where HomeView is sold

Apple announced HomeView on 13 October at £299 in the UK and $299 in the US. Pre-orders are open in the UK, the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, India and Singapore, and the device arrives on 13 November. It will not be sold in any EU country, because Siri AI is not yet available there.
