Zack Nelson’s JerryRigEverything durability test, published on 24 October, found dust getting into the iPhone Duo’s hinge despite its IP68 rating. In the bend test, the inner display gained a permanent green line and then stopped responding.
According to MacRumors’ write-up of the video, the dust entered through several points in the hinge and overwhelmed the magnets that hold the phone shut.
The outer screen, protected by Ceramic Shield 2, only began to show scratches at level 7 on the Mohs hardness scale. The inner screen marked at level 2, although Nelson said its matte nano-texture coating tended to mask scratches. He also pointed out that folding phones have now been on sale for about seven years.
The iPhone Duo’s hinge was earlier examined in a CT scan we covered.
Apple has not commented on the test, and it is unclear whether the dust ingress is a one-off in the tested unit or a design issue affecting other units.
