Apple has added App Store screenshots showing its built-in apps running on the iPhone Duo, MacRumors found on 20 October, ahead of the foldable’s launch on 23 October. Many built-in apps use a layout like Apple’s iPad apps, with a sidebar taking up part of the display.
Contacts, for example, shows a list of names on one side and an editing pane on the other. The Siri app displays a tiled list of conversations on the left and the full conversation on the right, without a traditional sidebar. Preview adds bottom tool palettes alongside its sidebars and navigation bars.
The screenshots also show how the interface adapts when the device is open. The iPhone Duo normally uses a vertical dock and vertical navigation bars on the right, but in an open, portrait-like orientation the navigation bars stay at the bottom. Apple recommends that orientation for apps that use keyboards and for browsing in Safari. Pressing and holding an icon brings up a floating popover that is not scaled up, so it takes up less of the display than on Apple’s smaller iPhones.
On the Home Screen, the Today View with widgets sits on the left and app icons on the right, with Lock Screen shortcuts in the bottom right corner. The inner display has no always-visible Dynamic Island because it has no Face ID and its FaceTime camera sits under the screen; the island can still expand from the side for alerts. The outer display has a small vertical Dynamic Island around the camera cutout.
The screenshots do not show side-by-side apps or multiple windows of the same app, although both are supported, and the iPhone Duo can be used in laptop-style, tent and book-like partially open positions. Apple has not said which third-party apps will be updated in time for launch. For prices and specs, see our iPhone Duo price, release date and specs guide.
