Apple is testing iPhone Duo 2 prototypes with Face ID built in beneath the outer display, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman said on the latest episode of his Power On podcast, published on 22 October. The first iPhone Duo goes on sale on 23 October with Touch ID in its side button instead.

The second-generation model is expected in autumn 2027, but Apple has not decided whether under-display Face ID will ship in it. Gurman added that Apple employees are also exploring an Action button for a future iPhone Duo, though he sounded less certain about that plan.

The missing Face ID was one of the most common complaints in the first iPhone Duo reviews, and several reviewers singled out Touch ID. The foldable is so thin that there was no room for the depth-sensing components, so Apple uses a fingerprint sensor in the side button, as on iPad. In September, Gurman suggested Face ID might not arrive before the third generation; the prototypes suggest Apple is aiming to bring it forward. It is not yet clear whether Face ID would replace Touch ID or sit alongside it.

Apple has not commented on future iPhone Duo models. Its next confirmed launch moment is the ‘Pro and tell’ event on 28 October, and Gurman has separately reported that new Macs and an iPad mini are due on 6 November.
