Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported in his 1 November Power On newsletter that Apple’s iPhone Duo, which launched on 23 October in over 70 countries, was rushed to market with insufficient inventory and that some screens are cracking at the hinge, and he also shared impressions of a touch-screen MacBook Pro and a gaming shake-up in Apple’s software division.
The inventory shortfall is severe: delivery estimates for new orders run to 25 January, and Apple has told retail staff to warn walk-in customers away from buying the Duo, according to MacRumors. Gurman had previously called the pre-order strategy a “major mistake”, as we covered. On top of the stock problems, some Duo owners are reporting that the inner screens crack at the hinge. We covered these reports after launch and noted it was too early to judge the scale; Apple has not publicly commented.
Gurman’s Power On newsletter also covers two other topics. He shares impressions of a touch-screen MacBook Pro, though the newsletter gives no details on its design or intended use. He also reports a gaming shake-up within Apple’s software division, without specifying whether it involves leadership changes, layoffs or other restructuring. The newsletter’s paywall means no further information is available.
